John’s gone sculpture

John was my eldest brother. He fought a cancer bravely for several years but finally died on the 6th February 2016. I was making this sculpture when he died so this is my homage to him. It hangs on the wall outside at the entrance to my home where it will remain.

This sculpture is made of iron plate. The work consists of shapes cut from iron plate with a blowtorch and then soldered to form the figures. The sculpture depicts two girls and two boys relaxing reclined on a sofa listening to the guitar played by one of the boys and the flute played by a girl.
In the past I spent many hours sketching the human figure in the Circle de Bellas Artes in Madrid. The members are privileged with the possibility of drawing from models in different poses for various lengths of time. I enjoyed the 5-minute poses which obliges one to capture the moment. From these drawings, I made compositions of several figures in different attitudes. Hence my composition series.

At the time that started working on iron plate sculptures, I was doing a series of oil paintings and prints of these compositions. It occurred to me that I could also make 2 dimensional sculptures of these figures.
