This sculpture is made directly with plaster on an armature and painted with acrylic paint. The sculpture depicts a fisherman mending his nets. It forms part of my fishermen series inspired while on holiday in Ibiza when I used to cycle to pick up the newspapers in the early morning so saw the fishermen mending the nets after their night`s fishing. I was fascinated by the movement of the figures so stopped to draw them.
I had fun making the apron as I used an apron of mine which I soaked in plaster and then just draped it over the figure to dry.
Another anecdote of this sculpture is that I needed to find a fisherman`s net. I happened to be on a cruise which stopped in Katakolon and walking around the harbour I called out to a fishman who gave me a piece of netting. When I arrived home to put the netting on the sculpture, I found a seahorse in the netting which I put on the sculpture. I then varnished the netting so that it wound hold in place.
This figure is not for sale as it is too fragile to send. He did go to Portugal but came back worse for wear!
